What is the

Beneficial Ownership Information Report (BOIR)?

The Beneficial Ownership Information Report (BOIR) is something new that U.S. businesses must do. It helps the government know who owns a business and stop bad things like stealing or hiding money

Important Things About the BOIR:

  • It is needed by a group called FinCEN

  • It is for most U.S. businesses

  • You must send it in by January 1st, 2025

  • If you don’t send it in, you can be fined up to $500 every day.

What Information is in the Report?

Businesses have to share important details about

who really owns the business, like:

  • Their full name

  • Their birthday

  • Their address

  • A special ID number, like a driver’s license or passport number

Why is the BOIR Important?

The BOIR helps:

  • Stop bad things like hiding money

  • Make businesses more responsible

  • Help the police when they need to investigate
